Seachem Purigen is a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer, not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at an excellent rate and capacity. Unlike other filtration products, Seachem Purigen is an organic filtration resin that works effectively to remove nitrogenous compounds and waste produced by fish, corals, and even plants, resulting in crystal-clear water.

Seachem Purigen ranges in color from almost white (cream) to light yellow, and its spherical and macroreticular structure provides it with microscopic pores that significantly increase its usable surface area, making it much more effective than a purely spherical resin.

When Seachem Purigen becomes exhausted, it can be regenerated using a solution of bleach and water, which literally "burns off" the organics that have been removed from the tank. However, it is important to note that some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen and make regeneration difficult. Users should avoid reusing Purigen if they detect any odor of bleach or chlorine, and they should soak the beads in a small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit if they are unsure.
